At Spur Local, strengthening communities is our life’s work. As the region’s only locally-focused guide to civic engagement, we believe in the power of small nonprofits to spark big change together.
In 2003, we were founded by philanthropist Barbara Harman as the Catalogue for Philanthropy, an annual publication for donors to discover and support community-based nonprofits with limited capacity to tell their stories to a larger audience. Over the last 20 years, our organization has both raised over $60M for local nonprofits and grown to become the largest nonprofit capacity builder in the region, designing resources specifically for nonprofits operating with small teams and budgets.
Now, as Spur Local, we create a stronger and more resilient region by cultivating critical connections between residents and the nonprofits in their neighborhoods. Our network includes 500+ small, local nonprofits and thousands of donors giving through our portal. Knowing that sustainable organizations are key to facilitating change, we have trained over 30,000 nonprofit professionals, strengthening their skills in fundraising, marketing, leadership and management, and more.
Every year, we engage 150+ residents who live and work in the Greater Washington region to volunteer as part of our nonprofit review process, choosing nonprofits that are critical to our communities here, where we live. We then conduct site visits and financial reviews with the selected nonprofits trusted by our volunteer team before inducting 70+ nonprofits annually into a four-year partnership with us, all at completely no cost to them.
Our work is rooted in collaboration, resiliency, empowerment, and community. We promote visibility, stimulate discussions and, together—as a sector, as a region, as neighbors—we are a catalyst for good.

Arlington Food Assistance Center
Fighting hunger one family at a time.
Providing dignified access to free groceries, allowing families to devote their limited financial resources to obligations such as housing, utilities, medication, and other basic needs.
Over 4,000 Arlington families weekly rely on AFAC groceries for their regular meals.
Supplemental groceries from AFAC mean that families can remain in their homes, workers can stay on the job, children are ready to learn, and mothers and babies receive essential nutrition. We help relieve the food budgets of our clients, allowing them to make other necessary purchases without sacrificing their health and nutrition needs.

Autism Community Alliance
Autism Community Alliance is a Washington DC metro area nonprofit that was founded by parents of young adults with autism who are passionate about offering families specialized post secondary options for the neurodivergent population who needs more supports to help them thrive and expand their interests. We are unique in that we take into account each individuals sensory needs and adjust, pivot the activities as needed to accommodate everyone. Community engagement is integral to our mission and our group is out in the community every day. The days activities are shared with campers and their families in advance to help them prepare. Families are encouraged to share advice and suggestions on activities or locations to visit! Every day is full of laughter and we pride ourselves on practicing “enjoying the process” even if our art project or cooking activity doesn’t turn out perfect!

Helping Our Neighbors in Crisis
FACETS is one of the largest social safety nets for families, children, and individuals in Fairfax County, Virginia. At FACETS, we meet people where they are, usually at the most vulnerable time in their lives, and help them build stronger futures.
We do this by offering emergency and basic needs assistance along with individualized case management to enable people to become self-sufficient and break the cycle of homelessness, poverty, and hunger.

SafeinHome is a trusted provider of Assistive and Sensor Technologies for people with disabilities throughout the State, and the only provider of Electronic Home-Based Services (EHBS) currently available in Virginia. SafeinHome shares Our Stomping Ground’s vision of creating accessible living environments that support independent living and encourage lifelong learning through a 24/7 Remote Support Staff to offer guidance and encourage decision making.
